Family & Succession Law
Family matters are legal problems wrapped around personal ones. We handle the legal side firmly and the personal side gently — and we keep your affairs private.
We act in matters under the Revised Family Code and the succession provisions of the Civil Code: the formation and dissolution of marriage, the division of common property, parental rights, and the transfer of estates from one generation to the next.
How we help
- Divorce proceedings — contested and by agreement — including division of common property
- Child custody, maintenance and visitation arrangements centred on the child's interest
- Marriage contracts and property regimes for couples who want clarity from the start
- Wills: drafting, safekeeping guidance and probate
- Certificates of heirship and administration of intestate estates
- Inheritance disputes, including claims involving property held abroad or heirs in the diaspora
Succession planning prevents family litigation
Most Ethiopian inheritance disputes trace back to a will that was never written or one that failed the Civil Code's formal requirements. A properly executed will costs little and spares a family years of court proceedings. We consider it some of the most valuable work we do.
Diaspora families
We regularly act for Ethiopians abroad — managing divorce, custody or inheritance proceedings in Addis Ababa through power of attorney, with updates you can follow from anywhere.
